Freemasonry isn’t about pretending to be a good man.
It’s about becoming one.
And that work…
doesn’t happen in the light alone.
It happens in the parts of yourself most men would rather ignore.
We all carry it.
The temper.
The ego.
The pride.
The urge to dominate, react, or tear down instead of build.
That’s the rough ashlar.
And here’s the truth most don’t want to hear:
Ignoring it doesn’t make you virtuous.
It makes you unaware.
A man who has never faced his own darkness isn’t peaceful—
he’s untested.
But a Mason?
A Mason is taught to know himself.
To chip away at the stone.
To examine his thoughts.
To govern his passions.
Not by pretending they don’t exist…
but by bringing them under control.
Because the real work of this Craft is this:
Taking what is rough, chaotic, and unrefined…
and shaping it into something useful.
That’s mastery.
Not the absence of darkness—
but the ability to stand in it… and choose the light anyway.
A good man isn’t weak.
He’s capable… but restrained.
He’s strong… but measured.
He’s aware of what he could be—
and chooses what he should be.
That’s the balance we’re taught.
That’s the work.
And that’s why Freemasonry matters.
Because a man who has faced himself honestly…
who has wrestled with his own ego…
who has brought his passions into due bounds…
Is not easily shaken.
Not easily led astray.
Not easily broken.
He becomes steady.
Reliable.
Useful.
To himself.
To his family.
To his Lodge.
And to the world around him.
So don’t shy away from the work, Brother.
Step into it.
Face it.
Shape it.
Because you can’t build a better man…
without first being honest about the one you are.
